How to talk to God + Start praying every day

Prayer 101

When I first became a Christian, someone told me I should pray.
I nodded like I knew what they meant—but I really didn’t.

Was I supposed to say something formal?
Did I have to use special words?
Was there a right or wrong way to do it?

If you're asking those questions too, you're in the right place.

Getting started

What is prayer really?

Prayer is simply talking to God. That’s it.

You don’t need fancy language. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just talk—and you listen.

You can pray out loud or silently. You can whisper, cry, laugh, or sit quietly. It’s not about performance—it’s about connection.

Why do we pray?

  • To thank God for who He is and what He’s done

  • To ask for help when life is overwhelming

  • To stay close to Him and hear His voice

  • To be real—even when we’re hurting, doubting, or confused

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”
— Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

Not sure what to say?

Start with four simple things:

  • Thank You – God, thank You for today.

  • Help Me – I need help with ___.

  • Show Me – What do You want me to learn or do?

  • Forgive Me – I’ve messed up. Please forgive me.

That’s a great place to begin.

.

Next Steps

Try praying for just 1–2 minutes today. No script. Just be real with God.
And remember—He’s not looking for perfect words. He’s looking for your heart.
